This dictionary app reflects the contents of the 14th edition of the Swedish Academy's Word List (SAOL 14) from 2015. The word list is based on the lexical database that was developed and continues to be developed at the Department of Swedish Language, University of Gothenburg.

What is SAOL?

SAOL 14 primarily provides recommendations on spelling, inflection, and word formation for a large selection of Swedish words. In addition, it also provides information on pronunciation and usage of words, and in many cases, brief explanations of meaning.

SAOL should not be confused with the definition dictionary Svensk ordbok published by the Swedish Academy (SO) and the historically focused work Svenska Akademiens ordbok (SAOB).

New and old in the vocabulary

SAOL 14 contains more than 13,000 new entries compared to the previous edition from 2006. Over 9,000 words from the previous edition have been removed.
